Maureen is a no-nonsense high school English teacher, whose uncompromising approach to both teaching and life has a tendency to impair her relationships. James is a special education instructor with a lackadaisical work ethic and questionable classroom methods that make him quite popular with the students. When the two are unhappily paired up for "team teaching" in September, it's unsurprisingly disastrous from the start. Maureen has a hard time sharing her classroom space and relinquishing any of her authority, and James finds her impossible to work with. To make matters worse, there are a couple of students who are more than ready to give them a run for their money. We can't help but wonder if they'll survive the school year, or each other for that matter!
Despite their rocky start, James and Maureen form an unlikely friendship. However, long kept secrets and personal demons threaten to derail their budding relationship, and it all comes down to whether or not they can overcome them together.
This is ultimately a love story about teaching, fairy tales (the ones we learn and the ones we tell ourselves), and how our childhood experiences affect us professionally and emotionally.

I really enjoyed this book, which was totally unexpected, to tell the truth. I really didn't like Maureen at all, and James came across as a sloppy, lazy pothead. But as they grew together, I became so involved. They both had personal issues that needed to be dealt with, which of course cause anger and misunderstanding. As other reviewers have mentioned, although James was supposedly a special needs teacher, except for a couple minor behavior issues at the beginning of the year, there was no evidence of anyone with the type of special needs I've worked with as a nurse in a day program. I would have enjoyed having that type of student in the story. But still, I feel comfortable recommending this book.Product details

The characters exhibit growth as they deal with their issues.
I really enjoyed this book and the characters in it. I also liked the literature references. I would definitely read another book by this author.
As a high school special ed teacher I could relate with the setting. A great read. A quick easy read.
Really loved it! It was about Maureen's and James' emotional problems and how they eventually solved them. Won't tell you how it ended.
The author captured the truth behind some of the relationships between regular ed and special ed teachers in an inclusive setting. It was fun seeing the personalities of the characters develop.
This is a perfect story about not judging g a book by its cover. Life has a way of making us who we are. These two really should never have been a couple when you look at the outside. The inside is what matters.
I LOVED this book. Once I started reading it, I didn't stop till I finished. As someone who grew up in SI, with many friends in the music scene and many friends who are now teachers, I related to the characters in such a way that it felt like I was reading a book about my friends. All the descriptive details, made it easy to envision every scene as I read it. This is a wonderfully written book, that draws the reader in. I highly recommend this book to everyone!
